Abstract

The purposes of this study were to analyze M.R.Kukrit  Pramoj’s literary techniques in presenting the world contexts and the role of world contexts that affected the characterization of the leading female character in Four Reigns.  This study also aimed at evaluating the writing techniques in comparison to Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.
The finding are as follows: M.R.Kukrit  Pramoj  presented changing world contexts concerning culture, politics, and economics from the reign of King Chulalongkorn to that of King Ananda with artistic and intellectual insights.  The author chose to present Ploy, the leading female character, as a focal point of the narrative that was so realistically affected by various world contexts that readers could completely understand and sympathize with this character.  This was also due to the choice of events and changes that were appropriately and clearly presented with unity.
From the analysis of the writing techniques in M.R.Kukrit  Pramoj’s Four Reigns and in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, one of the world’s masterpieces, it was found that Four Reigns could be considered a world masterpiece because it shared the following writing techniques with Sense and sensibility: creating major concepts from the titles of the novels, designing the plots, creating differences in characters, and narrating the stories from the third-person point of view.  Both novelists presented the social conditions as well as the relations between the world contexts and the main characters with artistic and intellectual insights for readers in all periods both in and outside the country.
In addition, M.R.Kukrit  Promoj made use of the world contexts in Four Reigns creatively and uniquely in four ways: using real people as a backdrop of the novel, choosing important events in the history to make impacts on the main character, recording specialized and exclusive historical knowledge and inserting small yet meaningful tips using Ploy either as the main witness of the events or as a character who appropriately connected one event to another.  These characteristics showed that Four Reigns was an even more remarkable novel than Sense and Sensibility.
In conclusion, the world contexts in Four Reigns played and important role in rendering the novel a successful and popular piece of writing from the time it was first published.  M.R.Kukrit  Pramoj projected both the western and the eastern world contexts using masterful literary techniques through the leading female character.  Consequently, the character Ploy and the world contexts made the novel a masterpiece.  The novel, in turn, remained popular due to the character Ploy who so impressively delivered the world contexts to the readers.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to analyze and evaluate the moral principles from 233 Buddha’s tales in the book of NIBATA JATAKA edited by Poonsak Sakdanuwat and Jom Boontaphes P. based on 29 criteria suggested in a thesis work, “The analysis and evaluation of the moral principles of youth characters in Botun’s novel from years 1979 to 1987”, written by Wimol Sae-Aueng in 1990 at Srinakarinwirot University Songkhla Campus.  The descriptive analysis and evaluation techniques were used to extract the moral contents from the 233 tales.  The result clearly showed that the moral principle called “mercy” was most frequently referred in several tales.  The merciful behavior alluded primarily was to support humans or animals to be free from suffering.  The second most frequent principles made reference in the book were “contribution, sacrifice and rationality”.  The majorities of manner founded in these principles were “generousness and meticulousness”.  The third most recurring moral principles mentioned in the book were “consciousness and faith” which represent significant behaviors: emotion controllability and following their religious doctrines.  The very least moral principles founded in the book were “violation of privacy and acceptability of change”.
